Monk Fruit - Your New Favourite Sweetener

Monk Fruit - Your New Favourite Sweetener

No doubt you have all heard about stevia, the popular zero calorie sweetener derived from the stevia plant. What you may not have heard about is monk fruit and how it is rapidly growing in popularity among the health conscious crowd.

Monk Fruit or 'Lo Han Guo' is a small brown/green fruit native to Southern China and Northern Thailand. Whilst it has been consumed in its native lands for thousands of years it has only just started to pop up in Australia as a natural sweetener in Vegan Protein powders and other such plant based health products.

Monk Fruit is a part of the Cucurbitaceae family (also called cucurbits and the gourd family). The cucurbitaceae family are a plant family consisting of about 965 species, the most important of which are:

  • Squash
  • Pumpkin
  • Zucchini
  • Watermelon
  • Cucumber

Monk Fruit gets its sweetness from natural compounds called mogrosides. Monk Fruit extract is then made by crushing the whole fruit to release its natural, sweet juice. The juice is then spray dried into a powder. There are many benefits to switching to monk fruit as your sweetener:

  • Doesn't affect blood sugar levels
  • Contains zero calories - perfect for anyone looking to lose weight
  • No bitter aftertaste

Monk Fruit is undoubtedly an exceptional replacement for sugar & other sweeteners and it is why we at Kind Life have chosen it as our sweetener in our Vegan Protein Powders and our Reds & Greens Superfood Powder
