Glossary

Aerobic Exercise - Also known as cardio, any activity that you can sustain for more than just a few minutes

Anaerobic Exercise - Anaerobic means without oxygen. Exercise whereby the demand for oxygen surpasses the supply, example are weightlifting and sprints.

Amino Acids - Are compounds that play critical roles in your body. They're needed for vital processes like the building of proteins and synthesis of hormones and neurotransmitters. They’re categorised as essential, conditionally essential or nonessential depending on many factors.

Biodegradable - A substance or object capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms and thereby avoiding pollution

Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) - Are a group of three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. They are essential, meaning they can't be produced by your body and must be obtained from food.

Complete Protein - A food source that contains all of the 9 essential amino acids to build and repair protein tissues in the body. The 9 essential amino acids are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine.

Environmentalist - A person who is concerned about protecting the environment

Essential Amino Acids (EAAs) - Are amino acids that cannot be made by your body and must be obtained through your diet. The 9 essential amino acids are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine.

GMO - GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. GMO's are organisms that have had their characteristics changed through the modification of their DNA

Muscle Synthesis - Is the process of building and accruing muscle mass. Muscle protein synthesis is essential for exercise recovery and adaptation.

Non - GMO - Non-GMO stands for non-genetically modified organisms.  Genetically Modified Organisms, also known as GMO's, are organisms created in a laboratory using genetic modification & engineering techniques.

Non Essential Amino Acids - Are amino acids that can be made by your body so is not essential to the human diet. There are 11 non essential amino acids: alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine, and tyrosine.

Organic - Organic is a term used for food that was grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertiliser. Irradiation and the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products produced from or by GMOs are generally prohibited by organic legislation as well.

PDCAA score - Protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score is a method of evaluating the quality of a protein based on both the amino acid requirements of humans and their ability to digest it.

Protein synthesis - Is the process by which proteins are formed in biological cells. Proteins carry out all the important functions of a cell such as transport, structural support, chemical reactions, cell communication and protection from harmful bacteria and viruses. Every protein molecule is made up of amino acids.

Superfood - A nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being

Sustainably Sourced - An exercise which goes beyond economic considerations and takes into account environmental, social and ethical factors as well
